Eileen Hawley

Eileen Hawley has spent more than 20 years as a communications professional with a wide range of experience in both government service and the private sector. She has extensive experience in crisis leadership and strategic communication and a well-earned reputation for fairness in dealing with media and the public, and for building and maintaining community relationships across diverse audiences.

Prior to joining Hickam Public Affairs, Eileen served as communications director and press secretary for Governor Sam Brownback. In that role she was responsible for developing strategic messages and leading communications across all state agencies.  She previously served as the Vice President, Operations at the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

Before moving to Kansas, Eileen worked at NASA for more than 15 years, providing the “Voice of Mission Control” for more than 40 Space Shuttle and Space Station missions, and leading communication efforts at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. At NASA she was a key advisor to senior leadership during times of crisis including the loss of the Shuttle Columbia in 2003.  As director of External Relations at JSC, she led an office that encompassed communications and public affairs, media relations, education outreach, and government relations. 

Eileen was named an Honorary Kansan in 1999 and, among other honors, was awarded NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal in 2008. She holds a bachelor’s degree in media studies (summa cum laude) from the University of Houston, Clear Lake and a master’s degree in strategic communication and leadership (with honors) from Seton Hall University.
